Release of The Storykeepers; Fr. Jose behind cross on right

Storykeepers for Children in South India

Over the past couple of years GoTell and Coad Media have facilitated the work of Fr. Joseph Palakeel to make The Storykeepers available in English and Malayalam to the thousands of children in Southern India whose first language is Malayalam. Fr. Jose issued this statement following its official release in December 2011:

I was fortunate to get The Storykeepers released by the Major Archbishop at the children’s mission meet in Bharanganam, where 20,000 children from all syro-malabar dioceses gathered.

The Storykeepers is a cartoon animation film in 13 half-hour episodes on 4 DVDs. Originally produced in Dublin ireland by Shepherd Films, it was telecast on BBC to children. I got copy rights for India and got them dubbed into Malayalam with the help of Mr Leo Thaddeus and Mr Sunesh. The film can be viewed in English and/or Malayalam, as one chooses from the initial menu. The guidebook is also prepared in English and Malayalam.

It is a thrilling adventure story set in Rome under Nero (AD64), where Ben and family with 5 children engage in a series of adventure to save Christians from persecution and to keep the stories of Jesus alive. Each episode has at least 3 stories from life of Jesus, his miracles and parables. It a captivating adventure story for children. Youth and adults also watch them with so much attention.

It is a wonderful tool for catechesis, family, prayer meetings. It can be shown to any audience including non-Christians as the stories are secular with Jesus stories merged into the evolving story. It is good for pastoral and evanglizing ministry.

The copies will be ready for sale by 20th of January. Approximate price is Rs.490/- for 4 DVDs and guidebook. I want to sell it at cost of production, which includes copyright royalties.

Storykeepers Translation Project

The IMPACT Center in Cochin, Kerala has been working with Coad Media and GoTell to translate “The Storykeepers” video series into Malayalam, the predominant language of southwestern India.

IMPACT

IMPACT—Initiatives for Missionary Pastoral Animation and Communication Theology—is a Christian response to the challenge of the emerging communication culture. IMPACT promotes an integral approach to communications media, with a strong conviction that media are not mere instruments for transmitting a message from a source to receiver; rather, media are integral to the communication process and message itself.

IMPACT is not a media center, but a program aimed at forming leaders and youth conversant with the predominant and emerging communication culture. Thus it aims at making the Church more communicative. It is located in Cochin, the financial and IT capital of the state of Kerala, India and is the capital of the state of Kerala. Land was purchased in 2007 and a section of the building to house the center is currently under construction to be completed by the time of our trip.

The IMPACT program is also aimed at generating missionary awareness and enthusiasm, promoting missionary vocations, and generating local resources for missionary work. This is achieved through publications, audiovisual productions, workshops, seminars, exhibitions and the like. IMPACT produces a mission monthly mission magazine for children, with the name Kadukumani (mustard seed) and a televised multimedia quiz competition for children. It brings stories from missions, comics, puzzles, cartoons, narratives to 7000 families. This mission trip will be IMPACT’s first large-scale educational program.

Dr. Joseph Palakeel is the founder and director of IMPACT. Dr. Palakeel is a Roman Catholic priest and a member of the Missionary Society of St. Thomas (MST) in India. He is a PhD graduate of the Gregorian University in Rome and a professor of theology and communications.
