Matthew 25:31 NRSV

2020 Telling with Commentary

Matthew 25:31-46 is sometimes called “The Judgment of the Nations” and sometimes “The Parable of the Sheep and the Goats.” Whatever you choose to call it, this story is the last teaching in Matthew’s Gospel before the mini-epic of Jesus’ passion, death, and resurrection. Its placement there indicates its preeminence. If you want to know what most mattered to Jesus, and to God, this is the teaching to learn by heart and to take to heart.

Amelia Boomershine tells the parable; New Testament scholar Tom Boomershine comments on it. For those following the lectionary, this story is the Gospel for the last Sunday in the calendar of the church year for Year A: Sunday, November 22, 2020.
