Lenten Studies on Mark and John

Goals of Program

  1. To form or nurture a “Scripture by Heart” ministry in the local church
  2. To live deeply into the stories of Jesus’ passion

Folks may want to participate in the course before making a decision about starting or participating in an on-going Scripture by Heart ministry.

It is Finished: Telling the Passion Story from John

In this program, participants will…

  • Acquire a process for internalizing biblical stories
  • Learn four stories from John
    • The Arrest (John 18:1-9)
    • Peter’s Denial (John 18:15-18, 25-27)
    • Trial Before Pilate (John 19:8-16)
    • Jesus’ Death (John 19:25b-30
  • Hear a telling of the whole passion, death and resurrection story (John 18-21)
  • Plan and execute a telling of some or all the stories for Palm/Passion Sunday (John 12:12-19 and John 18-19)

Don’t Be Afraid: Telling the Good News from Mark

In this program, participants will…

  • Acquire a process for internalizing biblical stories
  • Learn four stories from Mark
    • Anointing in Bethany (Mark 14:3-9)
    • Lord’s Supper (Mark 14:17-25)
    • Crucifixion (Mark 15:21-41)
    • Resurrection (Mark 16:1-8)
  • Hear a telling of the whole passion, death and resurrection story (Mark 14-16)
  • Plan and execute a telling of some or all of the stories for Palm/Passion Sunday (Mark 11:1-11 and Mark 14:1-15:47)

Study Book

It is highly recommended that participants get copies of Story Journey by Tom Boomershine. It is a primer on the art of biblical storytelling.
