GoTell to Scotland: “Teaching Mark as Performance Literature”
GoTell travels to St. Andrews, Scotland next month for participation in The International Society of Biblical Literature 2013 meeting. Tom is presenting a paper in The Gospel of Mark research unit.
The topic for the session is “Communication, Pedagogy, and the Gospel of Mark.” The aim is to invite scholars from a range of perspectives to apply their approach to the teaching of Mark. Key questions are: How do we evaluate traditional pedagogical models in light of recent approaches to the Gospel of Mark? What kind of educational and communicative practices should Markan studies develop in a pluralistic world? What differences, if any, do context (e.g., secular or confessional) and audience expectations make in our approach?
Tom was honored to be invited to present in this session. The title of his paper is “Teaching Mark as Performance Literature: Early-Literate and Post-Literate Pedagogies.” He will be addressing the parameters and specific methods for teaching Mark as a story–a story that needs to be learned and told by students orally and digitally in order to experience its meaning then and now.
Empowering Congregations as Storytelling Communities
GoTell has put together a 12-page handout to resource anyone involved with teaching biblical stories to adults, youth, or children. The handout begins with a listing of the basic components of a biblical storytelling workshop and then outlines a sample 75-90 minute session. The following 10 pages describe a rich variety of teaching methodologies to help people enjoy and tell biblical stories. The activities are grouped by the four main components of a basic biblical storytelling workshop: Learn, Understand, Connect, Tell.
