Audience Address and the Myth of Anti-Judaism in Mark’s Story of the Pilate Trial
Tom sent off his paper for presentation at the Society of Biblical Literature Annual Meeting next month in Denver. Here is the introduction:
Mark’s story of the trial of Jesus before Pilate has been frequently perceived and interpreted as an anti-Jewish narrative that was intended to shift the responsibility for Jesus’ death from the Romans to the Jews. The proposal here is that this story had a radically different impact when it was experienced as a story performed for first century audiences of the Judean diaspora in the aftermath of the Jewish-Roman war. In no sense was Mark’s story anti-Jewish. It was a story told to audiences of the Judean diaspora as an appeal from a “peace” party to follow and believe in Jesus as a Messiah of peace rather than a Messiah of victory in battle.

Monday with Jesus
Each Monday we email a message with resources for the upcoming Sunday Gospel story as designated by the Revised Common Lectionary, including a link to a YouTube video of the story being told, followed by casual Q&A commentary. If you want to be on the elist to receive “Monday with Jesus” emails, send me a message: amelia@gotell.org
For those who follow the rhythm of the liturgical year, below is our Monday with Jesus for the Gospel on Sunday, October 16. It’s the parable Jesus tells so his disciples would “pray always and not lose heart.” All of us disciples concerned about justice need to hear, learn, and tell this parable.
