The Core Proposal

Tom recently led the second of two day-long workshops with Oxford Presbyterian Church in Oxford, Ohio. The first was last Fall when participants were introduced to the art of biblical storytelling. The group started telling scriptures by heart in worship during Advent. Last month’s follow-up workshop focussed on teaching the story of Peter’s denial from Luke’s gospel, along with reviewing basics on biblical storytelling. His presentation on “The Theory of Biblical Storytelling” began with this “core proposal”:

The core proposal of the theory of biblical storytelling is that God has found a way of communicating with the human race in every age of human communication. Human perception of God has evolved over the millennia. The conviction of the Christian tradition is that God’s identity and spirit was revealed most clearly in the experience of Israel and in the life, death and resurrection of Jesus who is named Christ, Anointed One, Messiah. Biblical storytelling is then a wedding of the earliest and longest medium of human communication (orality), the earliest and most pervasive form of human communication (story), and the most complete set of stories through which God has been able to communicate most fully with humans.

Each Monday we email a message with resources for the upcoming Sunday Gospel story as designated by the Revised Common Lectionary, including a link to a YouTube video of the story being told, followed by casual Q&A commentary. If you want to be on the elist to receive “Monday with Jesus” emails, send me a message: amelia@gotell.org

The Anointing in John

“Anointed” John 12:1-8

The first story in April is “The Anointing in John.” The anointing of Jesus’ feet by Mary of Bethany is a gesture of profound love to which Judas responds with hostility. But Jesus recognizes what she has done and defends Mary. Judas never understood who Jesus was and what he was about. But Mary understood.
