On March 5 we will be leaving Dayton for a biblical storytelling mission in The Gambia, a country on the west coast of Africa. We will be joining 10 other members of the Network of Biblical Storytellers, which is sponsoring the trip, for a week of storytelling, preaching and teaching in Fajara and other cities.

The trip fulfills the vision of Juliana Rowe, wife of the Sierra Leone Ambassador to the UN, to bring the art and spiritual practice of biblical storytelling to West Africa. Juliana was inspired by a speech Tom made two years ago to spread biblical storytelling to other parts of the world. She went to The Gambia last year and led workshops there on her own. They were so well received that she asked Tom to head up a larger group, offering an “epic telling” and a certificate program. It was an offer he couldn’t refuse!

Tom and I are both preparing to tell the story of the raising of Lazarus from John 11 for Sunday morning worship, as well as to preach on it. Members of the group will be telling biblical stories in 10 different churches. We are also practicing stories from Matthew. Our American group will be joined by people from The Gambia in a two-hour “epic telling” of this Gospel. We would appreciate prayers for us and for the people of The Gambia.

The Gambia is the smallest country in Africa. Here is a map of The Gambia, 20 miles wide and 200 miles long, along the Gambia River.
